February 17, 2022, New York, NY: Larry Sharpe garners support from three political organizations seeking ballot access in New York in 2022, including the Libertarian Party of New York, the Forward Party, and Unite NY.

While appearing on Kennedy Nation, Libertarian Larry Sharpe officially announced his second run for Governor of New York. In an unprecedented move, he revealed that he anticipates the backing of three political groups: The Libertarian Party of New York, Andrew Yang’s Forward Party which includes many of his left-leaning supporters, and Unite NY which includes many former Republicans.

Larry Sharpe announces 3-way coalition for his candidacy for Governor of New York

A recent Zogby poll showed that compared to a two-way race between Kathy Hochul and Lee Zeldin, the addition of Larry Sharpe in a three-way race resulted in 4 points pulled from the Republican, 1 point pulled from the Democrat, and 1 point pulled from undecided voters.

“The recent Zogby poll made clear that people are dissatisfied with politics in our state and are seeking alternatives. Providing more choices in New York will be best achieved by coalitions instead of contentious partisanship.”
Larry Sharpe

With two additional lines, Sharpe intends to take a rarely-seen approach to campaigning by modeling cross-party cooperation. It is with this strategy that Sharpe expects to reach voters of all persuasions. Sharpe is leading with his “BRO” platform for: Ballot Access, Ranked Choice Voting, and Open Primaries. His platform also includes his “SUS” program, or Step-Up Stipend inspired by the concept of a negative income tax.

He previously earned automatic ballot access for the Libertarian Party when he attained almost 100,000 votes in the 2018 election. This was subsequently revoked as a line item in Governor Cuomo’s 2020 budget. Expecting that Kathy Hochul would continue Cuomo’s legacy, Sharpe garnered the support of Unite NY and the Forward Party to compete with the major political parties for voters in New York State.

Larry Sharpe is a native New Yorker, Marine Corps veteran, husband, and father.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Without having officially announced his candidacy, Larry Sharpe polls almost 4 times higher than the total votes he received in the 2018 election for Governor of New York.

Commissioned by Unite NY on January 22, 2002, John Zogby Strategies conducted a wide-ranging poll of New York State voters’ outlooks on the current political climate of their state, as reported in Forbes Magazine. Larry Sharpe has not officially announced his candidacy. Despite this fact, he garnered 6% sentiment from New Yorkers who indicated they intend to vote for him during this election cycle, in a three-way race against Governor Kathy Hochul, and Congressman Lee Zeldin. This is almost 4 times the percentage of votes Larry Sharpe received in 2018, which could mean over 350,000 votes if the election were held today.

With Cuomo dismissed from his long-held seat, 49% of voters indicated they believe NYS politics are off track. Cuomo’s Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul was appointed Governor by default after Cuomo resigned due to allegations of inappropriate conduct. 28% of voters are so disillusioned with the 2-party system in New York that they deem it as broken, according to the poll results. This is further indicated by 17% of New York voters changing their voter registration from a major party to either independent or third party in the past few years, according to John Zogby Strategies.

In his Forbes Magazine article, John Zogby said, “despite one-party dominance and record spending on social programs, many New Yorkers have or are considering voting with their feet.” One in three voters state they have considered or are making plans to leave the state due to New York politics, stifling mandates and regulations, and high taxes.

“You know, it occurs to me that the best way to hurt rich people is by turning them into poor people.” – Billy Ray Valentine

Blockchain technology has upended traditional finance. To outsiders, take your pick of cryptocurrency and it appears you are doing nothing more than pulling the handle on a slot machine. The payouts are just as large too if you pick the right token and pay as little as possible. This is the reason why a couple of provisions in the Infrastructure Spending Bill were so fraught with danger to this new industry. The first was aprovision requiring crypto-miners, developers, wallet companies and others who deal with tokens to register and send 1099’s to those who bought, used or sold them. This directly impacts the anonymity of using currency rather than say, a check, to purchase goods or services. The second is more egregious and when combined with the first provision spells out why and how Uncle Sam will end the panoply of tokens and possibly institute a virtual dollar as the preferred cryptocurrency in the US.

The recent infrastructure bill that passed the House this week contained a provision requiring “Brokers” in cryptocurrency to be knowledgeable about their customers. They would be required to obtain their customer’s name, address, phone numbers and Social Security numbers. Resulting transactions that the broker performs would result in a 1099 being sent to the account owner at the end of the year, much like a stock. Owners of cypto had to know this was coming after much debate during the Trump administration. Recently,SEC chair Gary Gensler stipulated that nearly all cryptocurrencies are a security and should subject to reporting of initial purchase date and price, quantities and sale date and price. The market has had time to digest this and, well frankly, expected it given the large bull market that has hit tokens. If there is income, you can be sure that Uncle Sam wants his cut. There was a second provision waiting in the wings that makes things far worse.

A recently added piece of text now makes electronic assets including NFTs and cryptocurrency subject to 26 USC Section 6050i. This section of the Internal Revenue Code governs cash transactions of over $10,000. This means that that should an asset or collection of assets used in a transaction be valued at over $10,000, it must be treated as cash. If a person in the transaction were to conceal or be unable to provide the buyer/seller information associated with this transaction, they are guilty of a felony punishable up to 5 years per offense. Not only that, no person may assist in an effort to make a transaction fall under the $10,000 limit, have omission or misstatement about the assets or block a person in the transaction from filing with the IRS. If they do, that’s the same 5-year felony. If this sounds like a provision to prevent money laundering, it is!

Once President Biden signs the bill, the Treasury will have until 2024 to implement these rules. Typically, this is a very public process where a Notice of Potential Rulemaking (NOPR) is posted. Industry stakeholders and the general public are allowed to provide comment on the rules, regulators are supposed to take them under advisement and then provide the actual rule. Two years is a very accelerated timeline for many administrative regulations. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has already stated that she wants to tax unrealized gains. Now that NFTs and cryptocurrency are now deemed “cash”, it would be a very small stretch to implement a provision that any increase in a virtual asset’s value is not an unrealized gain but rather akin to a dividend or interest payment. Dividends and interest are subject to taxation even when the initial asset is never sold. It is my belief that Secretary Yellen will deem any increase in value in any token or cryptocoin as such and taxable at year end.

Should the US Treasury or Federal Reserve create the virtual dollar, how do they get everyone to convert to it? There are several stable coins already in existence and how does one go about seizing them without the lengthy battle over private property. Also, the developers of the winning stable coin get a nice payout from Uncle Sam. Enter President Biden’s nominee for Comptroller of the Currency Saule Omerova. Ms. Omerova has proposed a shadow unelected Congress called the National Investment Authority as well as a virtual currency system. In a recent white paper titled “The People’s Ledger: How to Democratize Money and Finance the Economy”, she details that the Fed should hold the actual bank accounts of people while community banks are merely pass-through organizations accepting physical deposits. She also advocated for the virtual dollar as a means of commerce and controlling the population’s spending habits.

“The core idea here is simply to allow all U.S. citizens and lawful residents, local governments, nonbanking firms and nonbusiness entities to open transactional accounts directly with the Federal Reserve, thus bypassing private depository institutions. In this sense, it is a variation on the familiar FedAccounts – or FedCoin or “digital dollar wallets” etc. – theme.”The People’s Ledger

Should a virtual dollar be created with bank accounts at the Federal Reserve, Treasury Secretary Yellen may simply write a letter stating that virtual dollars are exempt from 6050i as the Fed already has the person’s information on file. This is explicitly allowed in the statute. This gives the virtual dollar an enormous market advantage while reducing other electronic assets to transactions conducted entirely outside the United States. These transactions are exempted from 6050i per statute. No vote from Congress or action by the President required. The American Public will have been bypassed and robbed at the same time.

If Ms. Omerova is confirmed, and it thankfully doesn’t look good, she could certainly create the provisions and developer documents necessary to create the virtual dollar. The Comptroller of the Currency was actually created to supervise banks and implement a uniform bank note. It is up in the air if the Comptroller could unilaterally require the Fed to create bank accounts for individuals or implement other ideas from “People’s Ledger”. Most of this would have to be passed in Congress which is looking wearily at the 2022 midterms. Even if Ms. Omerova’s nomination is withdrawn or voted down, Secretary Yellen certainly now has what she needs to tax all cryptocurrency accounts on an annual basis as they are now fungible “cash”. Much like the Sales and Local Taxes (SALT) cap, once these revenue generators are created, they are very difficult to get rid of.

Office of the Comptroller of the Currency

So how can the crypto community fix this or prevent it from coming to fruition? There are two alternatives left. One is to flood the NOPR process with comments and possibly cause enough rancor to slow the rule implementation. Second, and more importantly, help elect Libertarian Party members to Congress. Please hear me out on this.

The Republican Party is rather clueless when it comes to crypto and has a similar outlook on the industry. They may tax it less but they still want to tax it. Only the Libertarian Party understands that your cryptocurrency, and certainly your NFTs, have value and you are entitled to keep it! It’s the value the community or market places on it and it shouldn’t be devalued or cancelled by our Federal Government. They had no part in creating it.

Think of it this way, if I trade a rare football card for some rare baseball cards, there’s no taxable event and no records. Trading these assets should be no different. The Democratic Party has now instituted a system where I must pay taxes both on the gain in value of the card from when I bought it AND when I exchange it for something else. I must now also tell the government what other cards I own tell the government who I traded with. If I don’t, I face 5 years in prison. Libertarian Party candidates run on issues like these and they need this community’s help to get elected. Republicans will assuredly do nothing or make it even worse.

Enjoy the crypto-boom while it lasts. Help where and when you can. If things don’t change, please don’t be stuck in 2024 holding crypto-coins that will be subject to heavy reporting requirements the next time you make a trade or purchase.

Miniscule Primary Voter Turnout Demonstrates a Glaring Need for Democracy to Be Open to all Voters

Albany, NY, June 29, 2021 – Abysmal voter turnout in last week’s primary elections clearly demonstrates the need for election reform and Unite NY has been joined by entrepreneur and 2018 Libertarian candidate for Governor Larry Sharpe in calling on both the Democratic and Republican parties to open their primary processes to give more New Yorkers a greater say at the ballot box.

Last week the four largest cities across Upstate New York held contested democratic primaries for mayor and voter turnout was extremely low, with only 13 to 26 percent of registered democrats turning out to decide who will lead their cities. In Albany, Kathy Sheehan garnered a measly 3,600 votes in a city of nearly 100,000 people. The current leader in the Syracuse race attracted just over 2,700 votes, while total Democratic Party primary turnout in Rochester and Buffalo was 20 and 26 percent, respectively.

Given that these cities heavily favor Democrats, the primary often serves as the de facto election, meaning in a city like Buffalo where there is no general election opposition, only 7 percent of eligible voters will have cast a ballot for the likely incoming mayor.

Unite NY Founder Martin Babinec said, “Voter engagement is a vital part of giving people a voice and breaking the grip our current two-party system has by being tilted towards party bosses with restrictions that shut out competition in the electoral process. The fact of the matter is that people aren’t turning out to vote because they don’t feel like they have a choice or a voice in our current electoral process. That is precisely why we need reforms like open primaries, ranked choice voting, and initiative and referendum so that we can put the power of government back where it belongs, in the hands of the people.”

2018 Libertarian candidate for Governor Larry Sharpe said, “Closed primaries are the number one reason why New Yorkers feel trapped, feel powerless and then check-out. This is proven by the embarrassingly low primary voter turnout this year, after record voter turnout last year. The system is allowing the status quo to facilitate our statewide decay.”

Unite NY is the new political home for independent and moderate voters in New York and is strongly supporting a host of electoral reforms that will take power away from party bosses and put it back in the hands of the people. One of those reforms, Ranked Choice Voting was used in New York City and was extremely successful, driving more than 135,000 more New Yorkers to the polls than at the last open mayoral primary in 2013. That increase in voter participation is larger than the entire population of the Cities of Utica and Schenectady COMBINED.

New York is one of only 9 states that still uses a completely closed primary system, effectively disenfranchising more than three and half million voters in the state who are not enrolled in any political party. The need is even more dire since last year. Under the auspices of a COVID relief bill, five of New York’s seven minor parties lost ballot status, leaving half a million people without a party.

The action Unite NY is calling for does not require legislation, rather, both parties could simply change their rules to allow more New Yorkers to participate in the electoral process.

About Unite NY

Unite NY is a new political home in New York State for Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, independents, and others to come together to seek common sense solutions. This new movement offers a home to more than 3.5 million New York voters not currently enrolled in a major party. Focused on a non-partisan approach to fixing real problems in our government, democracy, and economy, Unite NY supports candidates who understand working together is the only way we can succeed. Further, in 2022, Unite NY seeks to establish a ballot line by running a candidate for Governor to help fill the void created by our loss of 5 of the 7 minor parties previously holding statewide ballot access now eliminated from voter choice as the result of 2020 legislation which tripled the qualification hurdles needed to qualify as a minor party.
Albany, New York, May 6, 2021: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced plans to allow sections of outdoor sporting events, starting with Yankees and Mets games but also including horse and auto racing events, to reopen at full capacity, using sections designated for those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Sections for those who are not vaccinated would remain at 33% capacity.

The Libertarian Party of New York (LPNY) rejects this scheme, and sees several insidious issues related to this policy.

Outdoor Sporting Events To Reopen Using Sections Designated For Those Vaccinated Against COVID-19 (Image Source: DW.com)

“This new emotion-based policy may be popular among the vaccinated – who, ironically, should have the least to fear – but accomplishes little other than removing personal choice and proclaiming the righteousness of having been vaccinated.” Cody Anderson, Chair of the LPNY, stated. “This policy allows people who have made the choice not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to be shamed and segregated, in public, based upon their vaccine status. Further, anyone wishing to attend a public sporting event will be forced to publicly disclose private health information, as the population density of their respective seating sections will be apparent from a distance. The class structure that Governor Cuomo has created around peoples’ vaccination status creates a de facto regime of vaccine mandates – do as you are told, or remain separate from everyone else. Let us be clear: this is not optional participation. This is an invasion of medical privacy and a forcible vaccine mandate.”

The 2021 NCAA Men’s Tournament has brought about a discussion of the “new” tolerance. This one isn’t about how the Women’s Tournament should be given as much attention and advertising as the Men’s. Its about how Oral Roberts University shouldn’t be allowed to play. Not due to any actions or statements from its players but because ORU doesn’t allow LGBTQ+ behavior on campus.

USA Today columnist Hemal Jhaveri began the call with an article calling for the ban because ORU follows “an archaic religion” and that “the university’s deeply bigoted anti-LGBTQ+ policies can’t and shouldn’t be ignored.” Jhaveri then calls for any university with such language to be banned from all NCAA activities. Jhaveri didn’t call out #1 seeded Baylor for having similar language or Creighton, Gonzaga, or Loyola Chicago for being Catholic institutions which do not support LGBTQ+ policies either. Just ORU so why? I’ll circle back to it.

ORU’s student handbooks specifically ban homosexual behavior in 2 locations. It also bans alcohol, drugs, gambling, dancing, skateboards, roller skates and water balloons. ORU never had a football team because Dr. Roberts found it to bring unsavory elements on campus. As a former Tulsan and having known people who were in Oral Roberts’ inner circle, this may be shocking to you but it isn’t a surprise to any of us. Dr. Roberts’ brand of Christianity was very fundamentalist. His ministry carried over into much of Tulsa’s political and social life during the 1970’s and 1980’s. I can tell you it had an impact on economic development. Tulsa lost many oil and gas company headquarters to Houston and Dallas during this time and they cited a lack of ability to attract talent as one of the reasons to leave. When the first ministry scandal occurred in the 1980’s, it broke the spell of the ministry’s hold on the city. The city council was reformed, economic development wasn’t subject to a moral veto and Tulsan’s began to plan for a future without Dr. Roberts. The Roberts family’s continued malfeasance with ORU funds in the subsequent years hasn’t been much of a surprise to many Tulsans.

So, why pick on ORU and make them the example? For one, their conservative philosophy and prior scandals make them an easy target. Second, they are small. The school’s enrollment has always been between 3,000 and 6,000 students at any particular time. This means the institution carries outsized influence within the NCAA.The NCAA rules are promulgated with every member having equal weight. The Ohio State with an enrollment of nearly 70,000 has just as much say on the rules of the tournament as ORU with 4,100. While the larger members certainly decide what rules are voted on, the votes themselves require many of the smaller schools to agree with them since they can, and do, out vote them. The third is likely more likely. It’s the attention the school gets from upset wins in the tournament. People learn the school exists and may see a university founded by a Native American and actively pursues students from impoverished communities as being diverse and tolerant. The media wants to dispel that belief as quickly as possible and serve as a reminder to other people of color that the “new” tolerance is the only tolerance for them.

What is a surprise is to what lengths the “new” tolerance is intolerant of any policy or institution that doesn’t kowtow to it. For example, a recent bill passed the House called the Equality Act. The Bill’s synopsis:

This bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. Specifically, the bill defines and includes sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation.

The bill expands the definition of public accommodations to include places or establishments that provide (1) exhibitions, recreation, exercise, amusement, gatherings, or displays; (2) goods, services, or programs; and (3) transportation services.

The bill allows the Department of Justice to intervene in equal protection actions in federal court on account of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The bill prohibits an individual from being denied access to a shared facility, including a restroom, a locker room, and a dressing room, that is in accordance with the individual’s gender identity.

While this all sounds well and good, there is no exclusion for religious facilities or institutions. By holding assemblies and gatherings, every church and religious facility will be determined to be a public accommodation and subject to the bill’s ban on discrimination. Remember the LGBTQ+ event last year where Elizabeth Warren and a number of other Democratic presidential candidates promised to punish churches for not being on the LGBTQ+ bandwagon? Well, here’s the effort to do so under the guise of making it so the trans community can use a bathroom.

This is a bona-fide case to eliminate the First Amendment prohibition on the establishment of a government religion. Religion being that all churches in the United States answer to the Government, not a higher power. Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious buildings will be required to follow government rules and implement the government’s priorities. It reminds me of Cromwell’s confiscation of churches in the 1649 or the dissolution of churches during the French Revolution.Cromwell may be more apt as religious activity was allowed as long as it was the Government’s version (Protestant) and ministers were government approved. This was specifically what our Founders sought to avoid when they banned a government church.

If you have never called your senator or written them a letter, now is the time. The Equality Act is one of the bills being cited as a reason to remove the filibuster and make the Senate operate just like the House. The Equality Act will actually take us to the brink rather than promote harmony. What observant Catholic wants any President to dictate who can receive communion? Why should an Orthodox synagogue be forced to house those who are not Jewish? Why should a conservative masque be forced to have co-ed services? Religious bodies have always been held in separate regard in our society as being able to deem who is fit or unfit to use their facilities. The closely held beliefs of deeply religious people should be allowed in church, where they are most dear to them. It is wrong and cruel to force beliefs on others and call it “Equality.” There is a competing bill called the Fairness For All Act and is supported by many church leaders of all different faiths. I would encourage you all to contact your senator and have them support this legislation rather than an “Equality” bill that is creates more inequality than ever before.

COVID PTSD is real and lockdowns drive veterans who already have PTSD towards suicidal behavior. These 5 steps can help after a year of social isolation.

“Cherry” came out on March 12, 2021. It’s a movie about an army medic suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In the context of National Let’s Laugh Day on March 19, and the International Day of Happiness on March 20th, we must shine a light on this escalating problem.

Military suicides have increased by as much as 20% during the coronavirus pandemic with a 30% spike for active Army personnel, up from 88 in 2019 to 114 in 2020 according to CBS News. COVID-19 PTSD is real, and when layered upon Veteran PTSD, it’s a recipe for disaster.

We’ve been socially isolated for over a year due to lockdowns on our lives and the economy. This pandemic is real, and deadly. But we cannot ignore the 18 million veterans in the US, many of whom suffer from mental health issues. Governors like Andrew Cuomo are ignoring the needs of people who served, in an attempt to maintain control and win votes.

Larry Sharpe was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Gulf War era. While he was active, he made hundreds of friends who still struggle from that time. And post USMC, he has worked with hundreds of Veterans who struggle with suicidal thoughts, even today. Sharpe ran for Governor of New York in 2018 and got about 100,000 votes. Numerous Sharpe supporters are veterans. He is still connected to many of them.

“Too often, I have heard of Vets asking their brother or sister to ‘hold’ their firearms. That means that last night, they had one in their month and didn’t pull the trigger. They are afraid that tonight will be different. This is unacceptable.”
Larry Sharpe

Recently, Sharpe spoke with US Army veteran, Justin Durm about suicide among veterans. Durm said, “I lost a friend that I’ve known since elementary school and it was a dark period in my life. He was a former marine. Semper fi.”

According to Sharpe, we must act IMMEDIATELY to deal with this veteran crisis and:

End the COVID-19 lockdowns and ask people instead to voluntarily stay home or get vaccinated if they are at high risk of infection.

Go through our contact lists and call every Veteran we know, to check in with them and let them know we’re available to talk.

Rework regulations that revoke gun licenses for mental health issues, which often result in veterans avoiding the mental health treatment they desperately need, out of fear that they’ll have their guns taken away.

Reach out to your local support group for veterans and ask them if they need help. If none is present, then start one.

Socialize with local veterans in healthy activities that help them to adjust to civilian life.

About The Sharpe Way: The Sharpe Way Show was founded by Larry Sharpe, the 2018 Libertarian Party candidate for Governor of New York to help heal the nation’s political divide between liberals and conservatives.

New York Entertainment Venues to Reopen Starting April 2nd After Larry Sharpe Instigates Comedy Club Lawsuit, Pressuring Cuomo to Stop Bankrupting Small Businesses.

The lawsuit that Larry Sharpe of The Sharpe Way organized with Dani Zoldan of Stand Up NY against Governor Cuomo proved successful. Two days after Attorney James Mermigis, the “Anti-Shutdown Lawyer” brought suit, Cuomo announced that entertainment venues including comedy clubs would be able to reopen on April 2 at 33% capacity.

Cuomo Announced That Entertainment Venues Including Comedy Clubs Would Be Able to Reopen on April 2

“Dani’s constant support of the industry made him the perfect person to be the face of this push against Andrew Cuomo.”
Larry Sharpe

Larry Sharpe defeated Governor Andrew Cuomo with a four-pronged attack.

He convinced Dani Zoldan, the owner of Stand Up NY, to sue Governor Cuomo.

For over two months, Sharpe’s team discussed strategy and vetted many lawyers on behalf of Zoldan to find the perfect fit for the case. Constitutional lawyer James Mermigis had a history of defeating Cuomo. This track record put more pressure on Cuomo than that of a lawyer who has not achieved positive impact with anti-shutdown cases.

The teams partnered to produce a website and petition at LegalizeComedy.NYC to raise awareness.

Through Zoldan’s media connections, they put together a media blitz where Zoldan represented Stand Up NY on multiple media outlets including The New York Post, Fox & Friends, NY1, and blogs including ILoveTheUpperWestSide.com and Patch.com.

Cuomo’s announcement to unshutter entertainment venues came just hours after an appearance by Larry Sharpe and Dani Zoldan on Bernie and Sid in the Morning.

Sharpe believes that we can defeat Cuomo again, in court if not at the ballot box. Cuomo has done enormous harm to people and small businesses over the last year, and politicians are not holding him accountable. Cuomo’s bad policies resulted in a 40% surge in bankruptcies since the lockdown began, with over 6,000 New York businesses shut down by September 2020, according to Bloomberg. His incompetence also resulted in thousands of deaths that the Cuomo Administration under-reported by 50% as of January 19, according to the Associated Press.

Larry Sharpe ran for governor in 2018 because he was fed up with the poor leadership that is failing New York State. He continues to help the people of New York despite being a plain citizen who does not hold public office. People are already using nicknames like “Liberator Larry” to describe the man who is taking on Cuomo one lawsuit at a time.

“Culture is the key to New York City rebuilding. It’s time to let us heal.”
Larry Sharpe
